Safety should always be your top priority when heading into the outdoors. Here are key tips to keep you and your group safe.
Weather Awareness
Always check the weather forecast before your trip. Be prepared for sudden changes — pack rain gear and warm layers even in summer. If thunderstorms are expected, avoid exposed ridgelines and open fields.
Wildlife Safety
- Store food in sealed containers or bear-proof canisters
- Never approach or feed wild animals
- Keep a clean campsite — food scraps attract animals
- Know what to do if you encounter a bear or snake in your area
Fire Safety
Only build fires in designated fire rings. Keep water or a shovel nearby. Never leave a fire unattended, and always fully extinguish it before leaving or sleeping.
Emergency Preparedness
- Tell someone your itinerary and expected return date
- Carry a first aid kit and know basic first aid
- Bring a map and compass — don't rely solely on your phone
- Pack a whistle and signal mirror for emergencies
